Gaithersburg is the vehicle-services capital of Montgomery County by a wide margin: it holds both of the county's MVA branches plus a VEIP site with self-service kiosks. If you live anywhere along I-270, this is where your paperwork gets done.
What Gaithersburg drivers need to know
- Montgomery County's two MVA branches are both here — Metropolitan Grove Road and Walnut Hill on South Westland Drive. They are about four miles apart and their queues are rarely the same length, so it is worth checking both before setting off.
- The Gaithersburg VEIP site has self-service kiosks that run around the clock. For shift workers and commuters who cannot reach a full-service station during staffed hours, this is the most useful emissions option in the county.
- Kiosks are card-only and occasionally offline. The MVA posts service alerts and redirects customers to full-service stations when one is down.
- Montgomery County is in the VEIP programme area, so biennial emissions testing applies.
Worth knowing: Being the county's hub cuts both ways — these are among the busiest MVA branches in Maryland. Book an appointment rather than walking in, and avoid the first and last days of the month.

The safety inspection itself
The standard is identical everywhere in Maryland — it is set by the Maryland State Police, not by the county. What changes from station to station is the price, the wait and the re-inspection policy, because Maryland does not cap the fee.
- Required when a vehicle is sold, titled or transferred, or when a new resident registers an out-of-state vehicle. It is not an annual test.
- The certificate is valid 90 days from issue.
- If the vehicle fails, you have 30 days or 1,000 miles to repair and return.
- Only a station licensed by the Maryland State Police can issue the certificate — how to check.
