How Much Does a Maryland Car Inspection Cost?
What you'll pay for a Maryland state vehicle safety inspection — plus re-inspection fees and the factors that affect the price.
Maryland does not set a fixed, statewide inspection fee. Each MVA-authorized station prices its own state vehicle safety inspection, so the cost can vary. In practice, most Maryland car inspections fall between $60 and $100.
Typical Maryland inspection pricing
Here's what our certified inspections typically run. Prices are representative — call (301) 555-1995 to confirm current rates before you visit.
| Service | Typical Price |
|---|---|
| Maryland State Vehicle Safety Inspection | $90 |
| New Resident / Out-of-State Inspection | $90 |
| Pre-Purchase Used Car Inspection | $90 |
| Re-Inspection (same station, within window) | $0–$25 |
| Full Re-Inspection (window expired) | Full fee |
Good to know: The inspection fee covers the safety check only. If your vehicle needs repairs to pass, those parts and labor are quoted separately — and you're free to have the work done wherever you choose.
What affects the cost of a Maryland inspection?
- Vehicle type and size. Larger vehicles, trucks, and modified vehicles can take longer to inspect.
- The station. Because Maryland lets each station set its own fee, prices vary across the state.
- Re-inspection timing. Return within 30 days or 1,000 miles at the same station and you'll usually pay little or nothing to re-check the failed items.
- Repairs. Any parts or labor needed to pass are separate from the inspection fee.
Is a re-inspection free in Maryland?
If your vehicle fails and you return to the same authorized station within 30 days or 1,000 miles (whichever comes first), re-inspection of the failed items is often free or heavily discounted. Miss that window and a full new inspection — and full fee — is required. See our re-inspection guide for the full rules.
